These systems rely on various sensors to monitor parameters such as visibility, temperature, humidity, and road surface conditions in real time. The monitoring information is uploaded wirelessly, providing real-time data support for traffic management departments to conduct weather warnings and provide travel services.

The system integrates multiple technologies, including data acquisition and control, computer software, and remote communication. It systematically integrates various meteorological sensors, including visibility sensors, remote-sensing road surface condition sensors, integrated meteorological sensor components, data loggers, fixed pole supports, power supply devices, and a cloud data platform. The modular hardware layout facilitates installation, commissioning, and subsequent maintenance on outdoor road sections.

The system continuously captures environmental parameters along highways around the clock, providing comprehensive monitoring of visibility, wind speed and direction, air temperature and humidity, atmospheric pressure, rainfall, and road surface conditions (dryness, wetness, icing, snow accumulation). The visibility device relies on infrared pulse light to detect the intensity of aerosol scattering in the air, and uses a dedicated algorithm to calculate the visible distance. A six-in-one integrated sensor centrally collects basic meteorological data. The ultrasonic anemometer uses a concealed top cover structure to avoid data deviations caused by rain and snow accumulation. The piezoelectric rain sensor uses thin-film sensing elements combined with neural network algorithms to filter out erroneous signals caused by dust and vibration.

The road weather monitoring system is equipped with a GPRS wireless transmission module by default. The monitored environmental data can be remotely transmitted to the management cloud. It supports both solar and mains power supply, adapting to outdoor locations with varying power conditions, such as mountain highways, bridges near water, and urban main roads.

Traffic management personnel can access real-time weather data aggregated in the cloud to promptly detect potential hazards such as fog, heavy rain, crosswinds, and icy roads, and implement speed limits, traffic control, and de-icing maintenance in advance. The system's monitoring information can also be used to provide travel weather tips, helping travelers plan their routes in advance, reducing the probability of road accidents in severe weather, and improving the environmental perception foundation of intelligent transportation.
