Patchy Fog: The Hidden Traffic Killer

Patchy fog, a localized dense fog phenomenon, is highly sudden and local in nature, posing a great threat to people's lives and travel safety.

On highways, vehicles generally travel at high speeds. When a vehicle unexpectedly enters a patchy fog area, the visibility can drop to an extremely low level in an instant, sometimes even only a few dozen meters. In such a situation, the driver simply has no time to react effectively. The road, vehicles, and obstacles ahead become blurred, and it is extremely likely to trigger serious traffic accidents such as rear - end collisions and crashes. This often leads to tragic multi - vehicle pile - ups, resulting in a large number of casualties and huge property losses. According to relevant data, among the traffic accidents caused by foggy weather, the proportion of accidents caused by patchy fog is as high as over 30%.

Visibility Monitoring Station

A visibility monitoring station is mainly composed of sensors, a data transmission network, a data processing center, and a warning release platform. The sensors are distributed in key areas such as roads, airports, and water areas, including visibility sensors, temperature sensors, humidity sensors, wind speed and direction sensors, etc., and are used to collect environmental meteorological data in real - time. The data transmission network transmits the data collected by the sensors to the data processing center through wired or wireless communication technologies. The data processing center uses high - performance computers and professional software to analyze, process, and store the received data. The warning release platform timely releases the processed patchy fog warning information to the public and relevant departments through channels such as traffic radio, electronic display screens, mobile phone text messages, and airport announcements.

The system realizes the monitoring and early warning of patchy fog based on the comprehensive analysis of multiple meteorological parameters. Visibility data is a key indicator for judging whether patchy fog has formed. When the visibility drops to a certain threshold, combined with data such as temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction, a professional algorithm model is used for analysis. For example, when the relative humidity is high, the temperature is appropriate, and the wind speed is low, if the visibility drops sharply, the system will judge that patchy fog may occur and predict the development and movement direction of patchy fog based on the data change trend. Once the existence and development trend of patchy fog are confirmed, the system quickly generates and releases warning information.
