A Road Weather Station is an automated observation system installed along highways specifically designed to monitor various meteorological elements and road conditions that affect traffic safety.
It consists of three components:

Data acquisition and communication unit: The core processor that collects sensor data and transmits it in real-time to the monitoring center via wired or wireless networks (such as 4G/5G)

They also monitor road surface conditions, such as road temperature and status, determining whether the road surface is dry, wet, flooded, snowy, or icy.
By providing early warning of severe weather conditions (such as fog patches, road icing, and strong crosswinds), they give drivers valuable reaction time, effectively reducing weather-related traffic accidents, especially serious chain collisions.
On the premise of ensuring safety, they avoid "one-size-fits-all" road closures due to weather uncertainty. Managers can take more scientific traffic control measures such as speed limits and diversion based on real-time data, maximizing road smoothness.
